charrettes for Sustainability Planning
The NCI Charrette System™ training teaches
you how to apply the complete charrette system to sustainability planning.
NCI trainings are organized around a series of in-depth case study exercises,
conducted in a small team format. The goal of the exercises is to teach
the essential tools for assessing and planning a sustainable planning project
using a NCI charrette. Greensburg,
KS is the sustainable
case study used in the NCI Charrette System™ training.

NCI Charrette System™ for Sustainability Projects
Sustainable community planning projects inherently have a high level of design and political complexity. The conventional “integrated design” process for buildings addresses design challenges but lacks the tools for applying the design process to large-scale community settings.The NCI Charrette System™ solves the unique challenges of sustainable projects by:
- Merging integrated design with the comprehensive NCI community involvement process
- Providing a holistic approach for handling a complex set of environmental, economic, and social variables
- Integrating all technical and political variables throughout the entire design process, thereby assuring a sustainable plan that is owned by the community
- Facilitating a transformation of community mindsets and preconceptions about sustainability through the unique NCI multiple-day charrette.
Sustainability is embedded throughout the NCI Charrette System
